In The Streets Of Rajasthan

Radha couldn't take it anymore. Her fractured arm was too painful to ignore. She was hungry and her dress was uncomfortable. Her blouse was tight on her and her skirt was too long and heavy.

Gulping, she looked ahead of her only to see a street. Hope rekindled in her heart as she raised her skirt and ran to the road. Sighing, she walked on the tarred roadside , heading to nowhere in mind.

And as if an unspoken prayer had been answered, a truck heading towards the other side of the street appeared. Desperate to be noticed in the darkness, she got in the middle of the road and waved frantically.

The driver was just a few minutes away from hitting her when he stopped the music and hit the the brakes. Beside him was a middle aged woman, his wife, who had seen the runaway bride and had alerted her husband.

Bringing his head out, he scolded Radha, "hey! Are you mad? Do you want to die?!" Radha cried as she run to the vehicle and shouted so that the man could hear her, "please help me, they want to take me away but I don't want to go!"

"Veer, get down and help her, she clearly looks like she needs help." Parvati, the older woman urged her husband while glaring at him.

"What if it's a trap, Parvati? This is what I hate sometimes. You want help everyone but you're one person." The man argued.

Seeing where this was going, Radha slowly turned and began to limp away from the car, her feet hurting from the torns and stones she had stepped on.

"Oh come on, Veer, can't you see that the little girl is hurt? She is probably one of those forced brides. Goons might be looking for her right now."

Parvati urged, feeling impatient.

When her husband glared at her,Β  she grinned in return and he huffed in defeat.

"I hate you sometimes, I cannot believe that I still can't say 'no' after twenty six years of marriage." Veer growled while getting out of the car.

"I love you too!" Parvati laughed, causing his frown to morph into a smile.

"Hey, little girl!" Veer called out. Radha immediately turned around.

"Come, let's go. We going to Rajasthan. Do you know anyone there?" He asked.

"Yes please, I have an aunt there." Radha lied while getting into the back of the car with his help.

"One of my daughter's saree is in that wooden box, wear it and stay in the box until we leave this town." He said.

"Thank you very much. You're a life saver, thanks a lot." Radha thanked him.

"Whatever. Thank my wife and your god instead." Veer muttered while getting into his car.

"Save it." Veer said, knowing that his wife was about start raining her signature praises on him just to coax him.

As he drove further, Radha found herself dozing off until the car came to aΒ  sudden halt.

"We're the only ones in the vehicle. Can you explain in detail exactly who you are looking for?" Veer's voice filled Radha's ears, causing her to hold her breath.

Then she heard Raj's voice. Raj had stopped the car with his men and while they searched the area, he talked to the couple.

"We are looking for a girl in a bridal attire, her height is just a little shorter than average, white skin with long black hair held in a bun. She is an eighteen year old."

Veer thought for a while before looking at his wife then turning to look at Raj while saying the last sentence, "wasn't she the girl we saw by the streets about an hour ago? It looked like she was going somewhere and when we stopped to help her, she just shouted and ran off into the bushes like some lunatic."

Raj found hope. Meanwhile, one of the men had climbed into the back of the vehicle, centimeters away from open the wooden box when Raj shouted, "let's go, she is not in this area. She is hiding in the bushes down the hill on the other side.

" That smart girl. We thought she was dead not knowing that that was her plan to escape." Raj grumbled while leading his men into the bushes again.

The moment they were gone, Veer began to drive faster than normal just so they won't be in town by the time Raj found out that he had been tricked. Radha breathed in relief.

Veer and his wife had to be angels.

How could an unprepared human being pull a clean trick so fast just like that without blinking?

"You're too fast, Veer, I almost passed out in fear. Didn't you see their guns?" Parvati said, exhaling. Veer chuckled.

"Who helps someone without a plan? What do you learn from all those romantic dramatic movies?" He teased while Parvati glared playfully at her husband.

Veer stopped the car close to the grand temple in Rajasthan in the early hours of the morning. Radha slowly got down. "Thank you very much." She joined her palms together. "I really appreciate what you have done for me." Radha said, overwhelmed by gratitude.

"It's our pleasure, my dear. Now hurry up and go see your aunt. We're off to work." Parvati said, smiling at the younger lady. Now without the heavy make up on her face, Parvati thought that the girl looked a lot like their mistress yet she kept quiet about it, not thinking much into it.

Radha waved at the couple and walked away, getting lost in the streets of Rajasthan.
